never too late to watch a good film! caught the Schindler's List last weekend and I loved it. cried several times during the film, and it convinced me that one man can really make a difference. so far watched 3 films concerning the second world war and Hilter and the Holocaust. there's Downfall, a German film depicting the downfall (as so the title says) of Hilter. it kinda presented Hitler in a different light, more humane and very very capable as a leader. there's also The Rise Of Evil, showing Hilter's rise to power. this kinda showed Hitler to be the mad cult leader, how a man, an opportunist, can make full good use of an absolute desperate situation to his atmost advantage. then there's Schindler's List, which portrayed the brutality of war, of genocide. how can a man(Hitler)'s hatred cause the deaths of 6 million Jews? well, it did.

suddenly it dawned upon me that the history testbooks we have are simply too basic. no description of the Holocaust in detail, not much mention of the masscare of Nanking, and there's so much more simply forgotten. and to add on to the fact that what we learn in History simply requires us to regegitate, no room for thinking or analyzing. we need to show the young how insane and inhumane men can really get, how this world came so far to what it is now (though it may not be much better...).

so much for history :P

There are times I find it hard to sleep at night
We are living through such troubled times
And every child that reaches out for someone to hold
For one moment they become my own
And how can I pretend that I don't know what's going on
When every second and every minute another soul is gone
-Destiny's Child "Stand up for Love"

Don't merely put off what u see in Africa to be something so far away
How far is so far?
Or is it occuring so frequently that we don't bade an eyelid anymore?
Yea u can always say we can do nothing to help.
I feel that way too
How helpless can we get?
Knowing those millions of people are even more helpless, lost.
Knowing those people cry and sob but not heard.

The world is not beautiful anymore.

While doing my reading on consumption culture in Singapore, thought I'd share this interesting little paragraph with u guys:

"On the escalators, a seen-but-unnoticed sight in shopping centres in Singapore is repeatedly enacted by different couples. As if overcome by the exhaustion of shopping, she (the female partner) appears no longer to be able to hold up her own body and stand on her own. She leans back on to him (her male partner) and he supports her body with his, props her up, eliminating all physical distance between them; bodies pasted together until the landing at the top or bottom of the escalators. Again as if in graditude, she may even give him a pecking-kiss."

It made me nod my head unknowingly until, well, perhaps my roomie may turn around and see that her roomie has somehow gone retarded. HAHA. By the way the above is an extract from Chua Beng Huat's 'Bodies in SHopping Centres: Displays, Shapes and Intimacies' in Chua Beng Huat's Life is not complete without shopping.

Never forget the importance of dong referencing. (hah)

this whole week had been very hectic due to 2 essays and 1 summary assignment.
on top of this, there's like tutorials to do, readings to read.
and not forgetting sorting out things for the exams.
essays dont mean you can simply finish them in one night
nor are they a matter of completing in a few hours.
they are research papers, meaning u need an extensive database
plus references and you can't plagurize (you'll be sued or get a major F grade).
then again, you need to do analysis
and come up with original examples to support your agruments.

there's so much so much to be done.

have been doing work together with chongmeng this week.
ok not forgetting shan, steven and denis.
everybody's busy.
you don't shake your ass and say "leave things to tomorrow"
you may just deeply regret it.

my bed reeks of davidoff's 'echo'.
ask chongmeng why.
but... (pauses to think) i like the smell.
coz davidoff has got one of the best smells in the world

Nothing is funnier than unhappiness,
I grant you that.
Yes, yes it's the most comical thing in the world
-Samuel Beckett

people who are unhappy are being totally ridiculous.
coz they are unhappy over things that don't mean anything.
Nothing means anything in this world.
men only invent things to make themselves happy.
hows that?

heard of a guy who went mad after seeing a horse being whipped?
yes, this man saw a horse being whipped by another man on the street
he broke down and went mad.
german philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche
someone who believed that God is dead
No, He isnt.
coz He's the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Sometimes, humanity just... disappoints.

My location now is canteen B, south spine, five minutes walk from Hall of Residence 4.
Something smells here; maybe it's the rubbish, something's leaking.
Been doing my research on my term papers and trying to get the info right n organized.
Yeah right, like I understand what the numerous lines mean.
Crap.

Dear roomie is here with me and Chongmeng as well.
Hmm, and some other nationalities- muggers (studying not robbing).
Listening to Jay.
Nice.

Hope I last thru this.
Sometimes when you think you can't,
you really can't.
But when you think you can,
miracles happen.

Don't give up on yourself :)

Sometimes you feel the world stop spinning,
time froze; you cease yearning.
The mind's blur and the heart's confused,
where should you go?

The person who's here is now gone,
and it feels so empty; so strange.
You want to run,
but someone comes up with a gun.

Sometimes you feel you should live in memories,
where everything is good; there's no worries.
You wish to be void of feelings,
so that it doesn't hurt so badly.

But why be blinded like this?
When you can live on, a life more fufilling.
Your eyes are closed, open them please
God is right here waiting for thee.

I'm gonna dive into my bed after this entry.

You know how the inspiration and urge to write comes to you only in the wee hours? I'm feeling like that. Sometimes, I wanna write but I dunno what to write about. The greatest invention has got to be writing. It revolutionized the world! Now, I'm just crapping coz I feel like writing. Wuahaha...

There's really a great diff between uni life and jc life. In uni, you start talking about guys going back for reservist and not going into ns. In uni, you meet people who have plans for their careers and marriages. In uni, you see people of different race, culture, language, heritage, country. In uni, you meet weird people, and I mean really weird people. In uni, you meet guys thinking if they make good husbands. In uni, you make decisions for yourself. In uni, you cannot possibly be spoon-fed. In uni, the world just got bigger.

I've got 3 essay assignments aka term papers on hand. Yucks. The soci ones are still okay. But eng lit? I've no idea how to do critical appreciation. Arghh.
